Who is a Extractive Metallurgist and what does he/she do?

Extractive metallurgy is concerned with the extraction of metal ores from earth's crust. It relates to the usage of technology of extraction of metals and minerals form metal ores. Metallurgy is one of the ancient practices which involve the study of properties of matter in different forms. It basically involves the structure of materials analyzed in macroscopic forms. It combines the knowledge of applied sciences and chemistry.

Metallurgists also see demand in forensic and disaster management such as failure analysis. They also find their scope in nano sciences and nano technology in the field of applied sciences. It is one of the ancient subjects derived from metallurgy and ceramics such as plastics and their properties, applications of semi conductors and biomaterials. There are several types of metallurgical processes like ore extraction & procession, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, etc. Metallurgists also find scope in polymers, semi conductors, metals, nano technology, crystallography, electronic & magnet materials, Ceramograhy, Tribology, glass sciences, textiles, etc.

Qualifications Required

M.Eng. or a Doctoral (Ph.D.) degree in Material engineering or even an accredited BSc degree in Material & mining engineering.
