Geneticist

Who is a Geneticist and what does he/she do?

A geneticist is a biological scientist who provides counseling to patients with genetic disorders. He is responsible for studying variations among individuals and problems of heredity.
There are mainly 2 types of Geneticist:

  • Laboratory Geneticist: These involve working in Labs and apply genetic technologies to areas of pharmacy, agriculture and crime.
  • Genetic counselors: They analyze inheritance patterns of patients & provide information and support to individuals with birth defects.

Career opportunities for Geneticist are:

  • Clinical : Providing consultation to patients in hospitals or private centers
  • Commercial: Operating with bio-tech companies who run genetic tests
  • Diagnostic Labs: Working with physicians and their patients
  • Education: Giving advice and recommendations to companies and students
  • Research: Working for research projects which involves genetics

Qualifications Required

Bachelor degree in science with majors in Genetics
Specialty subfield and some additional courses in genetics need to be completed.
