Who is a Technical Writer and what does he/she do?

A professional writer involved in creating, writing, maintaining and updating the technical documents is known as a Technical Writer. Documents such as white papers, design specifications, and user guides also fall under a Technical Writer. They are also known as technical communicator.

Explanation to a specific audience on any subject requires a technical writing. A technical writer may not be the subject matter expert, but can produce perfect and comprehensive documents by communicating with the subject matter experts and doing necessary research. Technical writers hired in companies, institutions and government firms don't expertise in a particular subject, but they expertise in gathering information, evaluating subject and audience to produce clear documentation. Creating accurate, unambiguous, complete and concise documentation is a sign of good technical writer. Documentation created may be in different forms such as printed, industrial film scripts, and electronic documentation.

Qualifications Required

Technical writer holds a combination of technical and language abilities. A degree or certificate in technical communications is required. Technical writer may go for a specialization in particular such as API writer, manufacturing, scientific or medical material.

Although there is no standard career path for a technical writer, but they can go for project management. After some experience a writer may be promoted to a senior writer, handling a small group of writers and complex projects. After attaining a documentation manager post one has to handle multiple projects and teams.

Potential earning capacity per annum:

A technical writer salary could be somewhere between rs symbol 2 Lac to rs symbol 3.5 Lac p.a. (Approx) which depends on their experience, education and age.
