Zoologist

Who is a Zoologist and what does he/she do?

Zoology is a branch of biology that deals with animals. The study mainly includes embryology, classification, structure and habits of all animals.

Zoology is vast branch containing several sub branches within it, as for example a zoologist involved in the study of fish biology would work as an ichthyologist. Similarly a zoologist involved in the study of mammals would work as a mammalogist. Zoology is a gift to the world by Ancient Greeks. Aristotle developed our primary system of animal classification. Although with the invention of microscope, birth of modern zoology took place but the contribution of Charles Darwin were extremely important. Darwin's theory of evolution helps to understand the relation between humans and animals and developed interest in animals as some thought that humans are their descendents. As zoology helps us to understand the world we live in it definitely an important field. There are vast numbers of areas in which a zoologist may work such as, work in zoos, be part of cloning experiment, behavior of the animals; they may get involved in archaeological digs, etc.

Qualifications Required

The qualifications may vary with respect to the specific job. For example a doctorate (Ph.D.) degree is required to be a lecturer in the university. Also there are number of posts where an honors degree is sufficient. As far technical knowledge is concerned it can be obtained by doing 1-, 2-, 3- years of diploma course in various fields such as museum skills, Nature Conservation, Oceanography.

Where can I work as a Zoologist?

A zoologist can apply to zoos, museums, colleges and universities, or private companies. One can also join with government agencies to work in inspection, management, research and other special areas. Also sometimes one needs to pass civil service examination to get into a government job.

Potential earning capacity per annum:

Zoologist salary could be somewhere between rs symbol 2 Lac to rs symbol 3.5 Lac p.a. (Approx) depending on the degree and experience.
