Operations Research

Who is a Operations Research and what does he/she do?

Operations research, also known as operational research is an interdisciplinary branch of formal science and applied mathematics that utilizes advanced analytical methods such as statistical analysis, mathematical modeling and mathematical optimization to solve complex decision-making problems. It is concerned with determining the maximum profit or performance with minimum loss or risk of some real-world objective.

Operational research comprises a vast range of problem solving techniques and methods to improve decision-making and efficiency. Different tools used by operational researchers are optimization, probability theory, statistics, graph theory, decision analysis, mathematical modeling and simulation. These tools are used, by operational researchers to solve given problems.

Qualifications Required

Basically a degree in operations research, or at least 24 semester hours with a combination of operations research, probability, statistics, mathematical logic or science. Also, 3 out of the 24 semesters must have been in the discipline of calculus.
