Who is a Soil Scientist and what does he/she do?

A soil scientist is one who studies the fertility, distribution, and organic composition of the earth's upper layer. The study of soil as natural resource on earth, including soil formation, mapping, classification, physical, biological, chemical and fertility properties of soils, is known as soil science.

Soil scientists perform various professional activities that include application of soil science knowledge. This work is undertaken in coordination with non-Soil Science professionals. Soil scientists specialize in categorizing soils. On this base, they determine which soil is best for construction material and which is best for growing crops. On the basis of level of nutrients, capacity of holding water, resistance to erosion and their composition classification of soil is done. They undertake the study of various soil samples, survey the land, and prepare maps to measure how rocky, moist or flat the soil is.

Qualifications Required

To become a soil scientist one must have a bachelor's degree in soil science or in a field closely related to it. If you are interested to teach in a university, you must have a master's or doctoral degree.
